Sights of the city come second to the thrill of discovering an amazing culinary delight.
We have made sure that we eat like the locals – no restaurants or fast food chains for us. If its good for the locals its good for us – it's the best way to uncover how a city lives.
Malays love to start their morning with a dish called Roti Canai. Basically the dish is a piece of fresh made roti and it comes with a dish of curry sauce that the roti is liberally dipped into. I am assuming it is the Indian influence on the country that has made this a national breakfast dish.
The dish is sold on nearly every street corner that you go to and its cheap, setting you back a couple of Ringgit.
When we got to KK, Jeff discovered a new version of this – the Roti Cobra, so off we went to find him one.
The store selling them was within the CentrePoint Shopping Centre hidden on the bottom level of their food court. The shop name is called Kedai Makan Islamic Restoran.
The place was packed with lunch time offerings laid out in the Malay buffet style we have come to know and love but Jeff only had eyes for his Cobra.
A roti is lovingly placed on a plate and then you can choose which curry you want on top, wether it be chicken, beef, fish etc. This provides the gravy that magically absorbs into the crisp Roti. Jeff went with beef. It is then paired with a side of vegetables and finished off with a glistening, gooey, delicious fried egg that brings the whole dish together.
You too can get this delicacy of Sabah for a whopping 6 Ringgit ($2 AUD). It definitely ticked Jeff’s boxes.
